With the economy being so bad, more than just a few people are faced with the fact that they have no job, nothing in the works, and their benefits are about to run out. Amazingly, even with 99 weeks of unemployment benefits, individuals are still running out before they can find work. Before your situation gets that dire, consider going back to school to find a new career.
The first decision that has to be made is for what major or field of study you will be going back to school. If a person has the means and the time, they can pursue another degree in a field that is more hire-friendly. If time is of the essence, consider shorter programs, like tech or beauty schools. Most of these programs can be completed in 12 to 24 months and offer placement.
A mistake a lot of people make is in not training themselves for school again before diving in with both feet. Unemployment currently has a program that allows candidates to take one class at the local community school free if there is class availability. This one class, regardless of the subject, is a great way to get back into the habit of studying, doing homework, and taking tests without putting too much pressure on yourself. Get through that one class and if all goes well, it is time to ramp it up to full-time studies.
Now it is time to figure out how all of this is going to be paid for once you start going full-time. Make use of all federal, state, and school aid to offset many of the costs of the actual tuition. Whatever the aid does not cover, try to win some scholarships that can lower the final bill even further. If you are lucky, student loans will cover the remainder of the bill and there will be out-of-pocket money needed until after graduation.
Once you are back in school, there is no second-guessing. The time frame before unemployment benefits run out will be a tight one and you have to make the most of the time you have with benefits coming in. When they run out, it may be necessary to find a part-time job, but try to find something that is in the field of study so getting a job upon graduation will be that much easier. Before you know it, you will not only have a degree, or possibly a second degree, but you will finally be back in the workforce bringing home a real paycheck!
